We are currently accepting Applications & donations
Om & Roam is seeking trained, female yoga teachers to be a part of our 3rd Annual Big Love for Burma Seva Project. We are so humbled by this unique opportunity to teach yoga asana at a Theravada Buddhist Nunnery near Yangon, Myanmar (Burma). This project is filled with heart and complete devotion to the selfless power of yoga. We are extremely fortunate to be invited back into this community to share yoga with hundreds of nuns and orphans. Our passion and purpose is to foster self-empowerment, self-respect and body awareness in our sisters in Myanmar (Burma) through yoga. The experience that we share is life transforming for all involved, it is an amazing synergy to witness!
a sacred opportunity
The seven-day yoga program is part of the annual meditation retreat held at the nunnery in alignment with Thingyan - the annual New Year water festival celebration. Thingyan is a time for cleansing ceremonies, deep meditation, community, and transition into the new year. The leaders of this nunnery made the progressive decision to incorporate a physical yoga practice into the annual Thingyan retreat. This relationship was born of the intention to provide the nuns and orphans with an outlet for body awareness, physical activity, and self-embodiment.
Our days will consist of teaching yoga asana together for over 4.5 hours a day to hundreds of nuns and orphans, broken up into smaller groups. We are invited to join in the daily meditation schedule observed at the retreat, as well as the new years ceremonies that take place. This is a sacred opportunity to both be in service and deepen your own meditation practice, a respectful level of discipline is required. Out of service to the nunnery, we are meant to be flexible and offer as many classes as we can throughout the meditation retreat schedule. We have organized the program with a ‘group’ teaching model - depending on your specific strengths and skills, we will assign you a ‘shift’ time and a rotation of roles. We all hope to be flexible in supporting the yoga class.
Below is a sample of our potential schedule. Please note that things change throughout the retreat, including times and expectations. We practice a great deal of flexibility, and adapt according to how we can best serve the needs of this community. Break times can be for resting, class planning, meditation, etc. Also note that meals are vegetarian and that fasting is observed during dinner (fasting is not required by our team, but can be observed by those who wish to participate. For those who wish to have dinner, it is possible to bring snacks/food in with us, as well as have fruit provided).

Our team will be living at the nunnery with housing and meals provided for us by the women we will be teaching. We will be offering a donation to the nunnery at the close of our stay in an effort to help offset the expense of our accommodations. We ask that each team member donate at least $150 per teacher (~$22/day).
